Badass Travel Tips

Field notes for calmer, smarter travel.

Start with connection, not emergencies.

Learn emergency language, yes. But make your first practiced phrases Hola, Por favor, Gracias, Perdón, and ¿Dónde está el baño? Say them out loud while packing, driving, or making coffee. The goal is not perfection. The goal is comfort.

When in doubt, go one step more polite.

Use usted. Say buenos días before asking a question. Add por favor. Say gracias afterward. Watch what locals do.

Create a tip pocket.

Keep a few small bills and coins separate from your main wallet for cafés, taxis, hotel staff, and small service moments. It helps you tip calmly, quickly, and safely without digging through your money in public.

Research how to behave, not just what to see.

Before you travel, look up local greetings, meal times, tipping customs, dress expectations, current safety guidance, and transportation norms.

Practice numbers out of order.

Travel rarely gives you numbers in sequence. A cashier says seventy eight. A hotel clerk says room four hundred twelve. Practice hearing and saying random numbers.

Memorize the question, not every destination.

Learn ¿Dónde está...?, ¿Cómo llego a...?, and ¿Este autobús va a...? and you can navigate anywhere.

Photograph your hotel details on arrival.

Take a photo of the hotel name, address, and room number, and save the location in your map app before you leave the building.

Ask one question beyond the obvious.

Where is the museum? Good. Also ask: What time is best to go? Where do people from here eat? Is there anything I should know before visiting?

Prepare emergency information before you need it.

Look up the local emergency number, save it in your phone, write it on paper, save your hotel address offline, and learn to say Necesito ayuda.

These tips are a taste. The full guide goes deeper into culture, customs, and real travel situations.
